AUSTRALIA – The Ankole Post – On Friday night, Kylie Minogue headlined the opening concert of WorldPride at the Domain in Sydney, marking the beginning of 17 days of LGBTQIA+ celebrations. Dannii Minogue made a surprise appearance and joined her sister on stage to launch WorldPride. The event also featured performances from Charli XCX, Jessica Mauboy, and hosting by Casey Donovan and Courtney Act.
The concert, which sold out with 20,000 tickets issued, allowed punters to enjoy food, drinks, and pre-show entertainment from 3pm, with the concert starting at 7pm. The event was broadcast on ABC TV, ABC iview, and ABC YouTube, the first time the broadcaster had covered the parade nationally in 20 years. Excitement was high ahead of the Mardi Gras Parade, which was expected to draw around 500,000 attendees and took place the following day, traveling up Oxford Street and down Flinders Street before concluding on Anzac Parade.
WorldPride 2023 coincides with several significant anniversaries, including the 50th anniversary of the first Australian Gay Pride Week, the 45th anniversary of the Mardi Gras Parade, and the fifth anniversary of the Australian marriage equality plebiscite. According to Sydney Mardi Gras CEO Albert Kruger, WorldPride presents an opportunity for Australians to reflect on the next steps for the movement.

Despite progress, discrimination still exists, including the ability for religious schools to discriminate against LGBTQI students and teachers and the barriers that trans and gender diverse people face when accessing identity documents that recognize them for who they are. Kruger believes that the festivities remain as relevant now as they were in 1978, and there is still a long way to go.
