Ugx shs.7.8 B power project launched in Rukungiri

Rukungiri – The government of Uganda with funding kawait government through the minister of energy and Mineral development has launched a shs.7.8 billion power project in Rukungiri district with an intension of extending power to over 100 villages in Buhunga, Ruhinda, Nyakagyeme sub-Counties all in Rukungiri district.The launched project will also extend power services to Western division in Rukungiri municipality once completed.

Addressing residents of Rukungiri district during Launch, an event at took place at Kihanga Playground in Buhunga, Kajwomushana in Ruhinda and Kigaga in Nyakagyeme Sub County respectively all in Rujumbura county Rukungiri district, the minister of Energy and mineral development Ms Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu emphasized government’s commitment to expanding electricity access to all parts of the country, highlighting its role in fostering economic development.”

This project is for the rural communities in Rukungiri district. For years, these areas had been without access to electricity, hindering their development and limiting opportunities. So the extension of electricity is expected to have a transformative impact on to their various aspects of life”. Ms Nankabirwa said.

Ms Nankabirwa also , stressed the government’s commitment to equitable development and the importance of providing basic services to all citizens, regardless of their location. ”

After conducting a carefully review of all procedures, we have now contracted City Harvest Electricals to handle this task and it expected to be completed in a space of 12 months and it will supply power to the sub counties of Buhunga, Ruhinda, Nyakagyeme, and some parts of Rukungiri Municipality where they already have poles that require only wires and transformers”. Ms Nankabirwa said.

The minister added ” The project is funded by Kuwait government and will be implemented by the ministry of energy and mineral development”.

Speaking at the same function, the minister of Security at the same time the Rukungiri county member of Parliament Rtd.Maj.Gen.Jim K Muhwezi said the project is aiming at boosting agricultural productivity and improve the quality of life for residents by providing access to power.

” This project marks the beginning of a new era for the community, filled with possibilities and opportunities for growth and development.” Minister Muhwezi said.

The minister also thanked Kuwait government for supporting Ugandan government by funding the project that will cause socio- economic transformation in communities once completed.”

” I must thank the Kuwait government for this support and it is from this point that I want to ask residents to this use this project for development “. Minister Muhwezi added.

The Rukungiri Municipality area Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa during the launch urged residents of Rukungiri municipality to use the launched project productively by starting income generating projects like salons, Wielding among which transform their lives financially.

” Access to electricity causes economic growth and this project will enable local businesses to thrive, improve healthcare facilities, and enhance educational opportunities once completed “. Dr Rutahigwa said.

Mr Tushabomwe Bernard a resident of Buhunga sub- county expressed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunities that electricity will bring.

“Charging my phone was a very big problem to me because I would trek a distance of over 5 Kilometer for this service. Am therefore excited for the launching of this project because I know am not the only who had been facing problem ” Mr Tushabomwe said.

Ms Kyatuhaire Bony, a resident of Nyakagyeme sub-County spoke about the challenges of conducting daily activities without electricity, such as studying at night, preserving food, and operating small businesses.

” Life without electricity was very hard am happy that the government of Uganda in collaboration with our area member of Parliament has finally remembered us”. Ms Kyatuhaire said.

Mr Muwumuza Robert another residents of Buhunga sub- county said ” the launching of this power project has brought a sense of hope and optimism, I anticipate for a positive change it will bring once completed “.

Mr Benson Mugisha, the Buhunga sub- county chairperson hailed the government of Uganda for remembering the local people of Buhunga sub- county.

” We are so excited for the this project at least my people are now relieved . With this project am sure our lives are going to change financially”. Mr Mugisha said.
