On Wednesday, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja faced angry residents in Appa township, Amuru district after announcing that they would be evicted within three months.

Nabbanja had met with locals and their leadership at Otwee Multi-Purpose Hall, where she informed them that all occupants of Apaa township should voluntarily leave by May 15, 2023, or face forceful eviction.

Compensation packages would be offered to affected people, including national identity cards, iron sheets, cement, and cash.

The government had allocated Shs 2.5 billion for the three-month exercise, which would begin immediately. Nabbanja also directed the ministry of Local Government to stop the operation of the Apaa market within a month.

However, Kilak North MP Anthony Akol interrupted Nabbanja’s statement and ordered her to leave the district immediately. The audience began booing the prime minister, and some charged towards her, prompting security to evacuate her and other officials from the venue.

Nabbanja had met with a delegation of Madi from Adjumani district earlier, who agreed to all her pronouncements. The ownership of Apaa township is under contention between the Madi of Adjumani and the Acholi of Amuru district, with government agencies also claiming that the area lies within their reserves.
