KAMPALA:

The High Court in Kampala has issued an interim order temporarily blocking the Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) from conducting their elections that were scheduled to take place on February 25, 2023. The order was issued in response to a petition filed by some members of the association who claim that the electoral process was not being conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

According to the petitioners, there were irregularities in the electoral process, including the disqualification of some candidates without proper justification and the use of an outdated voters’ register. They also claimed that the current leadership of the UJA was trying to manipulate the elections to ensure that their preferred candidates were elected.

The High Court has granted the interim order to give time for the petitioners to present their case before the court. The court will hear the case on March 3, 2023, and make a final ruling on the matter. The court also ordered the current leadership of the UJA to refrain from interfering with the electoral process until the case is concluded.

The UJA is an umbrella organization for journalists in Uganda, representing the interests of journalists and promoting professional standards in journalism. The association has over 1,000 members and plays an important role in promoting press freedom and media development in the country.

The postponement of the UJA elections is a setback for the organization and its members, who had been looking forward to the opportunity to elect new leaders and shape the future of the association.
