Ugandan pugilist Joshua Tukamuhebwa punched his way into the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games after outclassing Australia’s Billy Polkinghorn on Sunday, July 31.
Tukamuhebwa, who is the captain of the national boxing team, The Bombers, won the light welterweight contest on points (4-1) in the round-of-16 at the Exhibition Centre arena in Birmingham, England.
He is now just a win away from guaranteeing himself a medal from the club games. And that makes it a do-or-die bout for the Ugandan skipper in his next bout against Canada’s Wyatt Sanford.
Before Sunday’s win, Tukamuhebwa eliminated Northern Ireland’s John Paul Hale after winning on points (3-2) in the round-of-32.
Meanwhile, middleweight Yusuf Nkobeza became the third member of the Bombers’ squad to exit the games after losing to England’s Lewis Richardson on Sunday. He joined Jonathan Kyobe(featherweight) and light middleweight Isaac Ssenyange who lost their bouts on Saturday, July 30.
The other two Ugandan pugilists Owen Isaac Kibira (welterweight) and female fighter Teddy Nakimuli (light flyweight) step into the ring on Tuesday, August 2 and Wednesday, August 3 respectively.
