Rukungiri – The sports fraternities in Rukungiri district are worried with the current state of sanitation of the district stadium which they said to have hindered sports development in the district.

Sports people in the district say the current state of stadium’s sanitation is so worrying to the extent that people have now started using other stadiums in the district that are small and poorly standardized.

The two-acre ground, located in the southern division Rukungiri municipality has poor sanitary facilities that are currently putting the lives of the sports men at a great risk of contracting diseases originating from such poor facilities.

Mr Moses Mutabazi, football manager and a sports lover said the sanitary condition of the stadium is so much wanting saying that in case of nature calling they are forced to use neighbors toilets for defecation and for urinating men and women use bushes fearing to contract urinary infections ( UTI’S).

” We no longer use stadium toilets because they are ever dirty and we fear to contract diseases that result from poor sanitation. At least the government should  think of rehabilitating the stadium because it has never received a rehabilitation from the government yet it hosts national events also” Mr Mutabazi said.

Mr Agaba Alinde, manager  at Young engineers Football club says when entering the stadium one is welcomed by heaps of human waste, bad smell from the duty sanitary facilities.

” The current situation of stadium is so arming and if not attended in time sports men are at great risk of failing sick.” Mr Alinde said.

Mr Alinde asked the government to quickly intervene and work on the stadium to allow sports development in the district.

Mr Amos Arinaitwe, the Rukungiri district football association says the association has already shared their concerns about the pitch with the Municipal council and district authorities.

” The district is very much aware ,they well know that the stadium needs modern sanitary facilities because the current ones are a sorry state and we can no longer use them”.Mr Amos said.

Our reporter’s efforts to get a comment from the district sports officer were a failure since the district is operating without a sports officer.

Rukungiri main stadium was constructed in early 1940’s by than kigezi district and currently co-owned by Rukungiri district and Rukungiri municipal council.

Since it’s establishment, the stadium has never got any facelift and it’s current status needs immediate intervention from government.

The stadium is also multi-purpose purpose since is used for sports, political gatherings, religious gatherings, trade shows, music shows, national event celebrations among others.
