Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda is grappling with a severe shortage of blood, particularly blood group O and the negative rhesus factor. Henry Benda, the head of the field team in Hoima city and district, has expressed the urgency of the situation, revealing that the hospital recently lost two mothers due to the unavailability of blood.
To address this alarming crisis, the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services in Hoima has launched a campaign to collect a minimum of 500 units of blood within the current week. The scarcity of blood poses a significant threat to patients in need of urgent medical attention, emphasizing the importance of swift and widespread community involvement.
In response to the pressing need, a blood donation exercise was organized on January 3, 2024, at Wright Road. The event, held in collaboration with city mayor Brian Kaboyo, aimed to gather at least 100 blood units. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the campaign is set to continue on January 4, 2024, at the youth conference organized by Hoima Catholic Diocese in Mugalike, Kagadi district.

Henry Benda emphasized the critical shortage of blood group O and the negative rhesus factor at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, underlining the immediate need for community members to come forward and contribute to the ongoing blood donation efforts. The collaboration between the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services and local authorities, including city mayor Brian Kaboyo, signifies a united front in the race against time to replenish the blood stock and prevent further tragic incidents due to blood unavailability.
