OYAM:

Currently, pupils in P1 to P3 and their teachers at Angolo Primary School in Otwal Sub County, Oyam District, are having difficulty continuing with their lessons because efforts by school authorities to raise money to re-roof the classroom building blown off by strong winds last year on October 30th have not yielded any results.

During the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held last month, the school authorities and parents agreed to contribute UGX 5000 per household to help re-roof the classroom building and also lobby for support from partners and well-wishers, but all those budgeted plans have not given any hope.

George Otim, the headteacher of the school, says that at the moment, they are still conducting lessons under the trees within the school compound for P1 to P3, but he says that in the morning, P3 uses half of the remaining shade in their class, but during the afternoon lessons, it is difficult to accommodate them, so they are forced to turn to the tree shade.

According to the technical plan, 20 million shillings are required to re-roof the building, and according to the Chairperson of the School Management Committee (SMC), Jimmy Ongora, only 1 million shillings out of 20 million has been raised, which he says cannot complete the work.

Angolo Primary School in Otwal Sub County is a traditional Universal Primary Education (UPE) school in Oyam District founded under the Anglican Church in 1948, and currently has a total enrollment of 1,200 pupils.

Their academic performance in Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) has been generally poor for over five years, as they have not yet had any pupil in Division One for the last five years.
