President Museveni has asked Vice President Jessica Alupo and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to provide more information about their recent trip to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The President expressed concern over reports that they traveled with a delegation of more than 70 people. This request for clarification came during a National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus meeting at State House Entebbe.

Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua, who attended the meeting, stated that President Museveni is committed to combating corruption and urged leaders to report cases of corrupt officials with evidence. He also emphasized the need to address the issue of MPs’ debts and high interest rates charged by money lenders.

Regarding the UNGA trip, Obua mentioned that both Vice President Alupo and Prime Minister Nabbanja explained that they each traveled with a delegation of five people, and all members of their respective delegations had been approved. The President wanted clarity on the matter and was aware of their trips.

President Museveni’s concern about MPs’ debts led him to caution legislators against dealing with money lenders. He highlighted that such financial situations could affect their leadership. Consequently, the Ministry of Finance was tasked with collaborating with the Attorney General to create regulations that would control money lenders’ interest rates.

The Ministry of Finance was given a two-week deadline to promulgate a statutory instrument to enforce Section 90 of the Microfinance and Money Lenders’ Act 2016, with the aim of regulating interest rates charged by money lenders.
