Police to use Aerial Drones in Bukimbiri by-Election

Kisoro: Police are set to deploy aerial drones to help in surveillance and quelling riots during the voting exercise in Bukimbiri County, a by-election scheduled to be held tomorrow Thursday 11th August.

Independents Asgario Turyagyenda, Edward Mutabazi, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party James Owebeyi Mugyemani and National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag bearer are the candidates who were nominated to participate.

More than 1000 police officers and Uganda Peoples Defence Force soldiers are camped at St. Peters’ Rubuguri primary school in Rubuguri town council to Mann the exercise and ready to be deployed at 72 polling stations.

Our reporter saw anti-riot police assembling drones at St. Peters’ Rubuguri primary school compound and demonstrating how it will help in surveillance and quelling the riots in case of.

The police spokesperson for Kigezi region, Elly Maate says that security is ready to apprehend any person who attempts to disrupt the election.

Contestant Hon. Eddie Kwizera said that he is ready and not worried about the exercise. Turyageynda also says that apart from the attack he got from Kwizera while campaigning in Rubuguri town council, he has not faced any problem with the process.

Daniel Nayebare, Kisoro District Electoral commission returning officer says that the commission is very well prepared to handle the election.

Dispatching of election materials will be in the wee hours of 04:00 AM on Thursday morning from the electoral commission in Kisoro town to Bukimbiri County.  Voting will kick off at exactly 07:00 AM and end at exactly 04:00 PM.  Tallying will be held at Hope Mission church’s main hall in Rubuguri town council.  There are 32,219 voters in Bukimbiri County, according to the updated electoral commission register.
