KIGEZI:

The Right Reverend Gaddie Akanjuna, bishop of the Kigezi diocese, recently called on Christians to start backyard gardens to help fight poverty in their communities. During a Sunday sermon at St Paul’s Rukore Church in Lyakarimira town council, Ndorwa West County, Kabale district, he urged congregants to begin small gardens in their own yards as a way to transform their households and improve their economic situations.

According to the Ministry of Finance’s recent poverty status report, poverty rates in the region have decreased significantly from 56% in 1993 to 20.3% in 2021. However, the bishop believes that there is still a long way to go in terms of poverty reduction, and that individual action is essential in achieving this goal.

Bishop Akanjuna encouraged Christians to adopt the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM) as a means of lifting millions out of poverty. He also advised them to work together, respect time, and invest in growing macadamia and Hass avocado trees, which are high-earning crops that can help eradicate poverty.

By promoting backyard gardening, the bishop hopes to inspire more individuals and families to take action towards poverty alleviation in their communities. With his message of self-sufficiency and collective effort, Bishop Akanjuna is leading the charge in creating a more prosperous future for the Kigezi diocese.
