KAARO KARUNGI | KISORO – The Police in Kisoro district have in detention a 65-year-old man Yoweri Nzabonimpa on allegations of illegal mixing of medicines from both government, pharmacies and herbal to cure different illnesses.
While at Kisoro police central police station Nzabonimpa a resident of Nyagatembe village Muhindura parish Kanaba sub county in Kisoro district confessed having been treating people illegally at his domestic home since 1982.
He was on Friday netted red handed with four boxes of fake drugs of which he has been using to treat different diseases.
He was arrested in an operation mounted by Police and National Drugs Authority and was found with mixed drugs mixed with sweet Pepsi which according to him is a remedy for an illness known as Gapfura.
Yoweri preadded guilty of faking medicines and asked for forgiveness and added that he has treated many people since he started the illegal treatment clinic in his home and pleaded for mercy.
Syson Mugisha the Assistant Kisoro District Health Officer and HIV focal person as well as District NDA supervisor said that they were tipped off by Kisoro potters village administration after receiving many unconscious children patients who would need referral to bigger health facilities after receiving fake medication from Nzabonimpa.
Mugisha adds that they have found a register of over 40 people he has treated in this year and called up on residents to always seek for medication in authorized health facilities whenever they feel unwell.
Jane Mbonigaba the National Drugs Authority Western Region officer based in Mbarara cautioned members of the community to desist from engagement in such unathorised businesses that might land them in trouble.
Our reporter established that Nzabonimpa has been receiving numerous clients from Nyarusiza seeking treatment for Gapfula in addition to owning a church Appostles church in Kanyamisambi Muhindura Kanaaba sub county.
By press time, the suspect was recording a statement at Kisoro Central Police station.
