Two kickboxers from Mbarara have been lined up to represent the Western Region in the national kickboxing championship slated for next month in Kampala.

The pair of Brain Ndyamuhaki and Justus Turinawe has been undergoing intensive training under the guidance of coach Mohammad Nsubuga ever since the president relaxed the lockdown on sports.

“I am ready to take up this task and go through to represent this region (Western) and Uganda at large at a bigger stage in Egypt,” said Turinawe.

The Sport has not taken root in the region and according to coach Muhammad Nsubuga, the road to establishing stronger kickboxing clubs in the area starts now.

According to Uganda Kick Boxing Federation (UKBF) president Patrick Luyooza, the national event shall attract successful kickboxers from all regions to compete for slots to represent Uganda at the World Kick Boxing Championship in Egypt.

“We have had regions prepare bouts to select their representatives and those who will be successful at the national event, will be picked to represent the country at this continental event in October,” Luyooza.

The Egypt event, which is a World Championship to be hosted for the first time by an African country is set for October 18-24 in Cairo and will see a full board competition in all 8 weight categories but Luyooza says Uganda will only send 20 athletes that will compete in only 5 of the 8 categories ie K1, Low Kick, Full contact, Muay Thai and Mixed martial arts (MMA) referred to as cage fighting).

The selected 20 boxers for the international event will undergo a residential camp from where they will receive more drills and training before travelling to Egypt, but Luyooza says the challenge will be limited finances to cater for the team’s expenditure including feeding and accommodation while in camp and document processing and travel expenses.
