Ibanda – Stone quarrying activities on Ibanda hill in Ibanda district are reportedly to have been suspended by Ibanda district Authorities.
The development is due to severe environmental degradation that poses a significant risk to the local community most especially during the rainy season.
During today’s site visit to Ibanda hill , the Ibanda district leadership led by District Resident Commissioner (RDC) Mr Godfrey Mbetegyereize found extensive degradation bought by human activities, including quarrying.
The RDC was very much concerned about potential landslides, promising to engage the affected community and implement restoration measures.
Mr Robert Tumwesigye, the Ibanda Municipal Environment Officer said that all activities on the hill must stop with immediate effect saying that anyone intending to use this land for any purpose must first seek permission from Ibanda Municipal Council.
The Ibanda Municipal deputy Mayor Mr Deus Warugaba rechoed similar concerns, saying that the urgency of addressing the situation adding that the level of degradation on Ibanda Hill is alarming.
However, some residents who spoke with Pearlnewsug.com expressed their concerns over the ban stressing that stone quarrying was their primary source of livelihood asking the Authorities to support them in the sustainability of their families.
