The territorial Police of Nebbi have arrested a highway criminal for stealing goods from moving trucks along Pakwach Nebbi road.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Police Spokesperson says the officers also recovered the items they stole from the trucks in the Nyaravur area along Pakwach Nebbi road on 26th September 2022 at 4:00pm.

She also says this followed information from a local leader that the youths who rob vehicles in transit had returned to the area and had resumed the vice.

In response, the Officer In charge of Nyaravur Police Post in Nebbi district and the team went on patrol in a bid to secure the highway.

While on duty at around 4:00 am, the officers encountered three men on top of a moving fuel tanker dropping down items.

The police officers pursued the truck and ordered the suspects to come down. Unfortunately, two of the suspects escaped, but one was arrested after he came down from the truck and confronted the police officers with knives, Angucia said.

According to Angucia, the suspect arrested has been identified as Navia Oyirwoth and in the process of his arrest, a police officer fired a bullet in the air to warn the suspect but he continued to attack the officers which then prompted the officer to shoot him in the leg to disarm him.

She further says the suspect was then arrested and taken to Nebbi General Hospital for treatment.

However the officers were able to recover a sack of chicken feeds, 5 cartons of mineral water and 5 empty jerry cans at the scene.

She noted that the driver of the fuel tanker which was heading to Congo did not stop as he could not have realized what was happening and the search for the other two suspects on the run is ongoing as the recovered items are exhibited as inquiries continue into the matter under Nyaravur Police Post SD reference 05/26/09/2022, according to Angucia.

“We continue to warn people who rob trucks along the highways to desist from the act or else they will be arrested by our well-informed police patrollers and prosecuted accordingly”, she warns.

She also urges the general public not to resist arrest or fight back against the arresting officers, otherwise reasonable force may be applied to them which may cause them bodily injuries.
