Progressive People’s Party (PPP) leader Abed Bwanika has asked the National Unity Platform (NUP) to allow party members to be able to negotiate with the government about detained members to do so.

Recall that Bwanika has been calling for negotiations with the government for some time. He has now stepped up to this after MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya were released. Rumours and reports from the likes of Bwanika suggested that the two MPs were released through government negotiations.

The MP’s made the remarks on a political talk show were met with stiff resistance from Erias Lukwago. The Mayor of Kampala has said that human rights are respected. And there is no way, as an opposition, to sit at the round table with Museveni. This is an opinion that has long been echoed by NUP President, Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.
However, Bwanika was vehemently opposed. He highlighted how NUP MP, Hon. Betty Nambooze and Hon. How was Shamim Malende treated during the time of the government s full participation?

According to Bwanika, the government spent more than 1. 2 billion Shs on Nambooze by the time she recovered from her illness. This amount is even more than that spent on the late speaker, the venerable Jacob Oulanyah.

The MP for Kimanya- Kabonera said a respected man found Nambooze seriously ill in Rubaga hospital. He made a phone call and then several delegates converged to fly Nambooze to the United States. Those were just negotiations with the regime and the NUP gave up. Therefore, he does not understand why the party does not do the same to others in prison. According to Bwanika, they must be freed and regain their way of life. But if the opposition does not do that but negotiates for its delegates, that is a double-edged sword and hypocrisy.

The former presidential candidate also said the NUP should abandon their colleagues and negotiate with the government. That is, if the party is afraid to sit down at the round table with President Museveni.

He added that it would be a pity if the Ssewanyana MP died as he is believed to be in critical condition. This was because the NUP had previously had the opportunity to negotiate and secure his release with Ssegirinya.

However, they continued to drag their feet, despite the news that MPs’ health was deteriorating. Bwanika wondered if the NUP thought Museveni would take them to the hospital.
