National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has announced that the party’s lawyers are working to secure the release of 14 arrested members, including party secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya and spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi.
The arrests took place on Monday morning at NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala, where the group had gathered for a prayer session in honor of their fallen party members.
Bobi Wine expressed his determination to continue their struggle despite the ongoing arrests. He stated, “The world should, however, know that despite the continuous arrests, we won’t keep silent. We shall continue with the struggle. The entire world that needs change is behind us. So, just keep watch, we shall tell you our next program.”
Bobi Wine made these remarks during a media briefing at his home in Magere, Wakiso district, on Monday, October 9, 2023.
The arrested NUP members are currently being held at Kira Police Station in Kampala. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, they are yet to provide statements, and their next steps will be determined after the statements are recorded. They may either be released on bond or brought to court, depending on the investigation’s outcome.
The group is being investigated for inciting violence, as stated by Owoyesigyire when questioned about the charges against them.
