A Joint police and UPDF team in Otuke district has gunned down a notorious thief who had stolen a police gun.

Norman Ouni Kauna, 36, was shot dead on Tuesday night while trying to rob a shop in Owinyo ward, Olilim Town Council.

Police say Ouni attacked the shop owner holding him at gunpoint, but the situation was saved when neighbors alerted the authorities.

A joint police and UPDF operation was launched to apprehend Ouni, who was shot dead after he turned his gun on the security forces.

North Kyoga Police Spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema said Ouni was a notorious thief who had stolen the police gun from Paul Oculi, a guard at the Electoral Commission offices in Otuke District.

Oculi was hit by a blunt object on the head and left unconscious when the gun was stolen.

The stolen gun was later used to murder Costa Apio, a 37-year-old resident of Alutkot village, as she returned from a drinking joint.

Okema encouraged the community to continue cooperating with security forces to maintain law and order.
