The Ministry of Health have fulfilled, President Yoweri Museveni’s 2016 pledge of upgrading Kyegegwa Health Center IV in Kyegegwa district to a general hospital.

According to a July 30, letter by the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, Dr Diana Atwiine, to the Kyegegwa Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) the upgrade will be effective financial year 2021/2022.

Kyegegwa HC IV has been upgraded to the status of a general hospital to meet the health needs of the growing population in the district and its environs.

The upgrade of the facility is expected to ease pressure on hospitals like Kyenjojo as well as other health facilities and improve healthcare in the community.

Other factors considered for upgrade are the infrastructure improvement under the Development Response to Displacement Impact Project (DRDIP).

Atwiine instructed the CAO to fast track the recruitment process with the Ministry of Public Service to ensure the staffing levels of the upgraded facility are filled.

The CAO was also instructed to submit to the Ministry of Health, the remaining infrastructure development needs to fully functionalise the facility as per the Service standards.

This is confirmed in a letter written by Diana Atwine, the Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, to the Kyegegwa district local government and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Atwine says the upgrade is with mediate effect, and has requested that staff needed at a hospital level be recruited.

Atwine’s letter.

At the same time, the health centre has been lacking basic facilities like a functional theatre, imaging department, yet it serves a huge population including refugees.

In most cases, patients would fail to get medical services and resort to Mubende regional referral hospital, which is quite distant.

With this upgrade, it means there will be infrastructural development at the facility, new health services and new staff to handle different ailments.
