Farmers have been urged to embrace crop irrigation technologies for improved production and food safety.

Ibanda resident district commissioner (RDC) Mary Bashongoka Kamaduka said irrigation ensures sustainable production throughout the year as farmers will no longer depend on rain-fed farming.

The RDC was, this afternoon, speaking at the launch of a demonstration irrigation scheme at the family of late Samson Kanyomushana in Igorora town council.

The irrigation system was provided and installed by the government under the micro-scale irrigation scheme programme being piloted in 40 districts countrywide, including Ibanda.

The system cost sh28m to install, according to the district production officer, Fredrick Ayorekire.

Speaking the event, district chairman Herbert Happy Mayanja, encouraged farmers to work in cooperatives to acquire small and movable irrigation equipment which they can use as a group.

This approach should also help solve the problem of lack of sustainable water sources, especially in the water-stressed areas of Ibanda, he added.

Stuart Katwikirize, who represented the family, said the unit will help spur coffee output and hence the family income. He added that the impacts of climate change were adversely affecting production, a challenge that will now be addressed.
