A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) senior officer has been remanded over murder.

Maj Nelson Marks Kyakuta, 50, was arraigned before the Makindye-based court-martial and charged with one count of murder and two counts of failure to protect war materials.

Kyatuka who is attached to counter-terrorism at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence, and a resident of Lubaga, Kampala, allegedly shot at Majid Mugwanya, causing his death.

The prosecution alleges that on July 14, 2021, at Nateete, Kyatuka shot Mugwanya dead in a bar brawl.

Mugwanya was a resident of Busega Kibumbiro and a businessman running various businesses in Kampala and Entebbe.

It is further alleged that Kyatuka on the same date failed to protect war materials when he lost a firearm (a pistol JERICO type serial number 45306156).

He also lost 15 rounds of ammunition for the said pistol, offences contrary to section 122 (i) (ii) of the UPDF Act of 2005.

He, however, denied the charges read to him.

Capt Ambrose Guma for the prosecution informed court that investigations are about to be concluded and prayed for august 25, 2021, for mention of the case. The case was adjourned to then after defence counsel Elizabeth Nyansingwa had no objection to the prayers.

He was remanded to Makindye Military Police quarter guard until then for mention of the case.
