The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga has urged the ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM to always address candid issues instead of blaming Buganda on tribalistic voting patterns.
This follows NRM’s poor performance in Buganda in the recently held general presidential and Parliamentary elections, where different parliamentary seats lost in Buganda region to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party led by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, and some voices attributed the results to sectarianism.
Speaking to journalists in Kampala, Mayiga said such talk is divisive and fronted by people who want to make ‘political twists, adding that whoever has anything to say about the voting patterns in Buganda should look at addressing the grievances of the people and not make political statements.
He also reasoned that whoever is fronting the tribal views should first question why Bobi Wine was voted for in Kamuli and other parts in Busoga and Museveni voted for highly in Western Uganda.
“Kyagulanyi was voted in the east and in many areas. They should first explain why Kyagulanyi was elected in Kadaga’s constituency, so that is cheap talk, but in any case, Museveni was voted in Ankole,” Mayiga said.
“I find the tribal talk extremely misplaced. Most of the government programmes do not benefit the ordinary people. Poverty in the countryside is so much, and corruption is on rampage….those are all issues the NRM leaders should address with courage and humility, instead of picking on Bagada. It is not good for national unity.”
