Ntungamo- Ntungamo district Veterinary Authorities have extended the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) quarantine for more than 2 weeks with an intention of suppressing the disease within the district.
The decision was reached during yesterday’s 1st June 2026 stakeholders’ meeting held at the district headquarters in the district council hall where veterinary officials reviewed field reports and evaluated the effectiveness of ongoing control measures.

According to Ntungamo District Veterinary Officer Dr. Yake Basulira the district has witnessed gradual improvement in the disease situation, largely due to coordinated efforts by multiple stakeholders.
“Basing on the updates from the field, we realized the situation is gradually improving with the involvement of multi-stakeholders but we have resolved to maintain the quarantine for an additional two weeks to monitor progress and determine the next course of action’’. Dr Basulira said.
Dr Basulira added that ‘’ During these 2 additional weeks , veterinary authorities will intensify sensitisation campaigns and conduct mass vaccination exercises targeting livestock farmers in the most affected areas, including Ruhaama, Kafunjo-Mirama, Kakukuru, Rwenanura, Nyarutuntu, Rwentobo and Rwahi’’.
Dr Basulira however said areas which have not registered any FMD cases may be allowed to resume normal livestock-related activities, although specific guidance will be issued after further assessment.‘
’ Areas with no foot and Mouth disease will resume normal livestock activities but they will operate under guidance which we shall come out with at the right time’’. Dr Basulira said.
