The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has disclosed to Parliament that as of January 31, 2024, Government ministries, departments, and agencies collectively owe the corporation a staggering 81.4 billion shillings in arrears for water utility bills. Of this amount, approximately 15.8 billion shillings are related to outstanding bills from government hospitals.
During a session on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, NWSC managers presented a list of national and regional referral hospitals with outstanding water bills to the Parliament Health Committee, chaired by Dr. Charles Ayume.
NWSC emphasized that government institutions accumulating domestic arrears exceeding the discount invoicing threshold approved by the Ministry of Finance face disconnection.

This measure comes after repeated attempts to enforce directives from the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, urging prioritization of water bills as the first call on quarterly releases of funds.
