The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has eulogized Lt Allan Tukamuhabwa Kapando, one of the pilots who lost their lives in the army helicopter crash on January 2, 2024, in Ntoroko District, as an “extraordinary serviceman.” The UPDF expressed sorrow over the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two soldiers, including Lt Tukamuhabwa, and a civilian named John Mukidi, whose house was demolished during the crash.

UPDF highlighted Lt Tukamuhabwa’s significant role in the fight against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants in Eastern DR Congo. Entebbe Air Force Wing Commander Brig Gen Chris Kasaija praised Lt Tukamuhabwa’s accomplishments, noting that he had completed his basic flying course and had reached the pinnacle of flying advanced combat helicopters with the Cobra Squadron.

“He did a good job and will always be remembered because he died in the line of duty. He will be missed, and the UPDF – Air Force will stand with the family of the late Lt Allan in these trying moments,” said Brig Gen Chris Kasaija during the pilot’s burial in his ancestral Seeta Village in Kinuuka Sub-county, Bwamiramira Parish, Lyantonde District.

The UPDF emphasized Lt Tukamuhabwa’s dedication to his duties, describing him as a unique and committed pilot who expected positive results from his routine tasks. The burial ceremony saw East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) lawmaker James Kakooza extending condolences to the family, pledging to support and educate Lt Tukamuhabwa’s children.

Kakooza also reiterated Uganda’s commitment to the pan-Africanism cause, ensuring security and prosperity in the East African region by addressing insecurity. The UPDF acknowledged that Lt Tukamuhabwa’s legacy would endure, emphasizing the ongoing mission to secure the nation and promote regional stability.
