Hon. Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development, has announced that she being victimized by the committee investigating the scandals of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Among told parliament on March 9th, 2023 that she is innocent and just a whistleblower.

“I don’t have power to budget and approve budgets for my ministry. I am being Victimised, yet I am the whistle-blower,” Minister Amongi Said

Among them it is added that she only started overseeing the NSSF last year and that all issues raised should be resolved by the Treasury Department.

“I started supervising NSSF last year in February. All the issues in the report were done under the Ministry of Finance. Why didn’t the committee put any recommendation for the Ministry of Finance that was solely supervising the fund before February last year?” Minister Amongi Asked

In response to Amy’s request for an additional 6 billion shillings from NSSF, she said that the funds would be used for NSSF implementation, compliance and enforcement.

Aisha Kabanda, The Woman MP of Butambala, expressed concern why Minister Amongi treated NSSF Director-General Patrick Ayota differently and his deputy Richard Byarugaba, i.e. rejecting the first person’s nomination and accepting the nomination of the former.

“Why did you treat the two officers (MD & Deputy MD) differently yet they faced similar circumstances? When their contracts expired you chose to renew the contract of the Deputy MD leaving out the MD?” Aisha Kabanda Asked

The Parliamentary committee investigating the NSSF story in its report to parliament recommended the resignation of Gender Minister Betty Amongi. However, Amongi has gone public and said that she won’t give up because she did nothing wrong.

The MPs adopted a recommendation from the House Select Committee, directing the Minister of Gender, Labor and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi resigns effective immediately for abuse of power.

The Select Committee, led by the MP of the South Division of Mbarara, Hon. Mwine Mpaka investigated alleged mismanagement of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and found that the minister’s action in ordering his department to pay 6 billion shillings was unusual.
