Kimaanya-Kabonera MP, Dr Abedi Bwanika, has accused his counterpart from Mukono Municipality, Ms. Bakireke Betty Nambooze, of being the main beneficiary of the government without wanting others to benefit.
Bwanika responded to Nambooze’s statement that there was no need to negotiate with the Ugandan government on matters related to the rescue of several National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who had been arrested and taken to military court.
Supporters were arrested during the election season in different parts of the country. While some of them were released, many others remained in prison for eighteen (18) months without trial. However, efforts by various stakeholders to achieve their release through an alternative method of dispute resolution have always been ignored by the State.
Earlier this year, following interstate engagement through many government officials on how to release the Opposition supporters. It was against this backdrop that some members of the opposition had mixed reactions, who immediately punished those involved in the negotiations that led to the release of the two male MPS.
While appearing on the NBS Barometer talk show, Dr Abedi Bwanika suggested that these negotiations need to be intensified to secure the freedom of imprisoned NUP supporters. However, the rejection from Mukono’s legislator left the two at odds over how to release political prisoners.
Nambooze argued that in negotiations there is always give and take and that the opposition must also name what it is willing to offer the government if it wants to release political prisoners through the such negotiations.
During another meetup on CBS FM Radio on Friday morning, Nambooze accused Bwanika of being a fraud serving two Bosses. She said the politician was inconsistent, “was a member of the NUP while he was also the current chairman of the People’s Development Party. He must have had different intentions from the NUP.”
However, Bwanika responded by arguing that Nambooze had negotiated privately with the state and had always benefited from the money provided to MPs for specialist treatment in the United States.
“Why do they want to benefit from government as they leave all other people suffering in prison? If it is give and take, let Nambooze tell us what she offered government to be given money for medication in the US far and beyond what is mandated by Parliament,” Bwanika said
He also added that the paranoid policy of “benefiting the government while causing others to suffer” is old and unnecessary. Everyone must be saved from prison.
