Many traditional schools in Uganda have increased their cut-off points for Senior Five students following better performance by the candidates in the 2022 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams. Schools such as Trinity College Nabbingo and St Henry’s College, Kitovu raised their cut-off points from 16 to 14 and from 15 to 14, respectively.

Other traditional schools that raised their cut-off points include Immaculate Hearts Girls School, Makerere College, Kawempe Muslim Secondary School, Kira College, Butiki, and Mbarara High School. The heads of these schools attributed the hikes to better performance by the candidates in the UCE exams.

However, some traditional schools have decided to maintain or lower their cut-off points to accommodate the majority of UCE candidates who gave them the first choice. Schools such as Gayaza High School, King’s College Budo, Ndejje SS, Gombe SS, and Mengo Senior Secondary School have maintained their cut-off points, while schools such as Nabisunsa Girls School, Mary Hill SS, Bweranyangi Girls SS, and Ntare School have lowered their cut-off points.

Officials from the Uganda National Examination Board reported that female students performed better than their male counterparts in English language, but boys performed better than girls in other subjects. Senior Five students are set to start school on March 6, and the Ministry of Education has cautioned schools against hiking school fees and bringing the deadline for completing payment of school fees closer.

The ministry has also asked schools to support Senior Six students in filling the Public Universities Joint Admissions Board forms, providing them with a wide range of choices to admission on National merit into Institutions of Higher Learning.

Some schools have been overcharging students for these forms, which cost only Shs52, 000. The ministry has warned that schools that defy the directive to maintain last year’s fees will be dealt with accordingly.
