KAMPALA:
There was late night drama at the NBS televison studios when two NUP MPs, Hon Betty Bakireke Nambooze and Hon Abed Bwanika clashed live on air after the duo disagreed over the ‘negotiation’ stance.
The clash ensued on the NBS Barometer show hosted by Zambali Bulasio Mukasa. The conflict began with a dispute over the release of two NUP MPs, Hon. Allan Ssewanyana and Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, according to Bwanika, was released after a long negotiation between the opposition and the government.

The two lawmakers have been behind bars for nearly two years but were released earlier this week on a 20 million UGX cash bail by Supreme Court Justice Masaka Lawrence Tweyanze. Their release raised questions after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions publicly withdrew its objection certificate, even authorizing it’s publicist Christine Okui to represent them at the hearing. Senior NUP officials, notably Bobi Wine, have limited public comment on the MPs’ release. This led their supporters to speculate that for the two to be released, one or more people had to sleep with the regime.
For a long time, Dr. Abed Bwanika lobbied his party and all the opposition to negotiate with the government for the release of all political prisoners.
However, most NUP members like Nambooze still vehemently opposed the decision, calling it a betrayal. According to them, there was no way they could sit down with Museveni because that was exactly what he wanted.
This seemed to upset Bwanika when Nambooze put it back on the NBS Barometer. The former presidential candidate wonders if Nambooze ever negotiated with the regime.
She swore she never was, right before Bwanika dropped the bomb. The outspoken MP from the Kimanya-Kabonera constituency asked Nambooze how she qualified to come to the United States for treatment.
He said Nambooze was taken to the Speaker’s office. Subsequent caucuses were held between Hon Anita and opposition MPs. These include Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, Hon. LOP Mathias Mpuuga and Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona. They urged the speaker to bring Nambooze, who was in critical condition, to receive full treatment in the United States.
Meanwhile, as Bwanika was saying all this, Nambooze got up from her seat and started protesting her innocence. She packed her things and prepared to leave the set.
She did not object to Bwanika’s claims and could not answer why she flew to the United States for treatment. Bwanika then called people like Nambooze selfish and greedy.
