” I am living a life which is not easy” Mudashiru says while looking at his hands that seem as rough as sand paper. He carreses them gently with teary eyes.

Kasumba Mudashiru is a 16 year old student of Buwambo Seed Secondary School and a resident of Buwambo, Gombe subcounty, Wakiso District.

Born into a family of illiterate parents and siblings, Mudashiru says that he would do what ever it takes to get an education. Despite the fact that Mudashiru’s 8 elder siblings did not attend school beyond primary 5, he sees himself at University in time to come.

“I love being in school and I admire educated people that’s why I resorted to brick laying so that I can afford my school fees.” Its sad when one doesn’t complete at least primary level Mudashiru adds.

Mudashiru started brick laying at the age of 13 while he was in primary 5. He did this as a precaution just in case his parents stopped paying his fees at this level just like his siblings. Little did he know that this would make him stand out. He was able to pay his school fees upto primary 7 where he sat his PLE and passed.

Mudashiru says that he makes each brick at 40 UGX. He makes about 400 or 500 bricks a day. Therefore he earns between 15,000 and 20,000 Shs a day which he saves for his school fees. He does this effectively during the holidays.

Mudashiru is proud of being in Senior one. He speaks about it with pride. He says that he wants to become a doctor and he will work hard to see that he achives his dream.
