The Dairy Development Authority (DDA) has announced that Uganda will soon be exporting powdered milk to Algeria in a bid to expand its dairy industry. The DDA executive director, Mr. Samson Akankiza, made the announcement during the release of the annual dairy performance report for the year 2021/2022 in Kampala. Mr. Akankiza emphasized that Uganda, being the second largest milk producer in East Africa after Kenya, has a large market opportunity for dairy products in Algeria.

Algeria has low milk production, and most of its milk products are imported from other countries. Mr. Akankiza explained that Uganda has quality milk that is organically produced, which makes it the best product on the market. He further stated that Uganda will be exporting more dairy products to Algeria, starting with powdered milk, which is already in the final stages of penetration. The Algerian team conducted technical verification of the dairy value chain regulatory framework in December last year.

The upcoming Joint Permanent Commission and business-to-business meetings between Uganda and Algeria will see some deals being signed off. According to Mr. Akankiza, the Kenyan market for dairy products is also fully open to local products.

The annual dairy performance report for the year 2021/2022 shows that Uganda’s milk production rose significantly to 3.22 billion litres compared to 2.8 billion litres in the previous financial year. At least Shs382.2 billion was generated from dairy exports, an increase from Shs344.2b in FY2020/2021. Licensed milk collection centres have also increased to 547 with a total capacity of 2.3 million litres, while processing dairy plants have increased to 160, an increase of 44 plants from the previous financial year.

However, the report also revealed that the national per capita milk consumption in Uganda is still very low according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. The estimated domestic milk per capita consumption in Uganda is 62 litres, which is far below the WHO recommendation of 200 litres.
