KAMPALA, UGANDA — Uganda has been added to the UK travel ban red list in an effort to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 strain that has been devastating Uganda and other parts of the world.

Uganda joins 23 other African countries on the UK’s red list for its travel ban.

Travel restrictions will be in effect as of June 29, 2021.

The statement also says the measures are temporary and are being kept under review.

An official UK government statement said the decision was reached after reviewing the latest scientific evidence about risks of community transmission of Covid-19 variants.

The decision states in part, “Any British, Irish, or third-country national with a home in the UK who has traveled out of or transited Uganda within 10 days of their arrival in the UK will be required to spend 10 days in quarantine in a government-approved facility.”.

The statement notes that the measures are temporary and will be reviewed periodically.

“Travel restrictions will only remain in place until the level of risks assessed to justify these measures is reduced. Several countries have been removed from the quarantine list due to precautions implemented to mitigate the threat posed by the COVID-19 variant of concern, including enhanced genomic surveillance.

The travel restriction will take effect on Tuesday, June 29, 2021.

According to the latest records from the Ministry of Health (https://twitter.com/MinofHealthUG ), travel restrictions come as Uganda battles the second wave of this pandemic, which struck in March 2020 and has since registered 75,537 cases and claimed 781 lives.

The UK also added 23 other African countries to its travel ban list, including South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, and Rwanda, in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
