The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has suggested a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni to discuss new demands presented by Opposition legislators concerning forced disappearances of citizens and alleged human rights violations. The Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba, recently presented four key demands, urging the government to release political prisoners, establish a Commission of Inquiry for the disappearance of 18 National Unity Platform (NUP) party supporters, and investigate cases of rape and defilement.

In response to the Opposition’s demands, Gen. David Muhoozi, the Minister of State for Internal Affairs, highlighted inconsistencies in reported missing persons’ cases and difficulties in investigations due to non-cooperation from alleged victims’ next of kin. Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi committed to convene a meeting with top judiciary leadership to address cases on remand exceeding constitutional requirements.

The Speaker, Anita Among, proposed a meeting with President Museveni to discuss the prolonged detention of suspects and deferred a decision on the Opposition’s demands until after her scheduled meeting with the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission next week. This upcoming meeting aims to involve key figures such as Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa and the Leader of the Opposition to find a resolution to the current impasse.
