Six people were killed in two separate accidents in Mbarara last evening, according to police. Five people were killed when their car collided with a lorry on the Mbarara-Isingiro highway in Nyamitanga.
One person was killed in the second accident, which involved a motorcycle and a Toyota Spacio on the Mbarara-Kabale road.
According to Rwizi region police spokesman Samson Kasasira, both accidents were caused by reckless driving, and he urged motorists to be cautious on the road.

“Cause of both accidents was reckless driving. The one of Insigiro. The reckless driving was on the side of the Canter, which was overtaking where it was not supposed to overtaking, and was about to collide with an oncoming motorcycle in the opposite direction and to avoid head on collision, it ended up running into the corolla that was moving in the same lane with it, killing all the five occupants in that car. And then the one of Ruti, it was still reckless driving on the side of the boda boda rider overtook without seeing what was oncoming ahead and ended up having a head on collusion with a Toyota Spacio, killing one passenger on the motorcycle and injuring two people”. Said Samson Kasasira.
By press time, police had identified five of the six people killed in the accident, and their bodies had yet to be handed over to relatives for burial. Only one individual lacked formal identification.
