Rukungiri – National Resistance Movement (NRM) party leaders in Rukungiri district have formed a reconciliation and disciplinary committee to address internal Misunderstandings.
The committee was formulated during yesterday ‘s 20.10.2025 reconciliation meeting that took place at Riverside hotel in Eastern division Rukungiri municipality.
The meeting which was called to bring reconciliation and harmony between the party members failed to yield anything positive, a thing that led to the formulation of a 30 committee to continue paving ways of bringing reconciliation and harmony among the party members.

During the meeting, the NRM party leaders also resolved to rally support for only party flag bearers, establish a disciplinary committee to handle indisciplined members who involve them as independents in the coming 2026 general elections after losing in the party primary elections.
Addressing the party members during the reconciliation, The Rukungiri district National Resistance movement (NRM) party chairperson who doubles as the minister of Security Rtd Maj.Gen Jim K Muhwezi said the committee will focus on bringing reconciliation between the party primary flag bearers and those intending to run as independent candidate in the coming 2026 general elections.
” The main purpose of this committee is to bring harmony amongst ourselves as NRM party members because I know there are some members who were defeated during our primary elections and they are now threatening to bounce back as independents . So we sat as the district NRM party leadership and formulated this committee to handle such issues ” Minister Muhwwezi said.
The minister added that ” the committee will not only work on bringing reconciliation but also pave a way that will create a favorable environment for all party flag bearers to win in the coming 2026 general elections “.
Member on the committee.
The Rukungiri district woman member of Parliament Ms Natukunda Midius Kaharata hailed the district NRM party chairperson for organizing the meeting saying that the meeting was timely and needed.
” Thank you , our party chairperson for calling this meeting because badly wanted to address certain issues that were going to affect the performance of the party in the coming 2026 general elections” ,Ms Kaharata said.
Ms Kaharata who then lost the flag to Ms Paula Turyahikayo said ” the committee will not yield much as bringing reconciliation and harmony among party members is concerned because reconciliation is not forced .It starts with individuals not a meeting”.
Ms Kaharata used the same platform and confessed that she is coming as an independent.
” Am not withdrawing my independent candidature. It is from this point that I am calling for your company on Wednesday 22rd.10.2025 as I will go for my nomination to complete for the candidate and that she will be nominated one Wednesday 22rd.10.2025 at 2pm.” district woman member of Parliament “. Ms Kaharata noted.
The Rukungiri Municipality member of Parliament NRM party flag bearer Rtd Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde is very optimistic that the committee will greatly help the party to perform well in the coming 2026 general elections.
” The committee that we have formulated is going to preform us a great work which I think will help the party to perform well in the coming 2026 general elections because am sure that those who were vowing to come as independents will withdraw from the race which will help party flag bearers ” Mr Tumukunde said.
He also asked the NRM party supporters in the district to only vote for party flag bearers.
” Kindly vote wisely because the party organized primary elections with an intention of choosing party flag bearers who will compete with other flag bearers from the opposition party. So those who lost should not lie to you that they are the right ones to vote. So vote wisely “. Gen Tumukunde added.
Mr Angelo Twinomuhangi who is also vowing to bounce back as independent candidate for the district chairperson seat after losing the flag to Mr Charles Andrewson Kateebire said the committee will not stop him from running as independent candidate but NRM leaning.
” The constitution of Uganda allows me to exercise my right of standing as a leader for any position in this country as long as I have qualifications for it. So formulating a committee has nothing to do with my independent candidature ” Mr Twinomuhangi said.
Mr Boaz Matiita, the NRM party flag bearer for Rukungiri municipal mayorship seat, believes the formulated committee will greatly streamline issues within the party.
“Yes, it may not address all the party issues but at least a few will work on something that will help the party in the coming 2026 general elections “. Mr Matiita said.
