The Uganda People’s Congress has requested the government to relax curfew hours purposely to give room to students who study in the evening.

While addressing the media at the party head offices on Uganda House in Kampala on Wednesday, the head of media and communications, Muzeyi Faizo, said since institutions of higher learning are slated to open on November 1, the government should consider extending curfew hours from 7:00 pm to at least 9:00 pm.

“The government should consider extending curfew hours purposely to allow evening classes/students to study.

“Most of these students are privately sponsored. They work during the day and study in the evening. There is a need to revisit the curfew hours to enable them to look for resources to finance their education, balance work, and studies as well as decongesting classes,” Muzeyi said.

Muzeyi said as a party, they welcome the government’s move to safely reopen the economy that saw the ease of the restrictions on open markets, worship places among others.

He said they have noted with concern that there are some glaring gaps that the government did not bear in mind while easing restrictions.

“The government limited the number of worshipers and public gatherings to 200 persons and that may again jeopardise the successes achieved in the fight against the spread of coronavirus,” he said.

He said that it should be recalled that during the 2020/21 general election campaigns, UPC called upon the Electoral Commission to revisit its measure when it restricted political campaign gatherings/meetings to not more than 70 people at first and then increased to 200.

Muzeyi said the government should not limit public gatherings to 200 persons but rather base the gathering on the size of the venue.

“There are some places that cannot even accommodate the approved number. The government should have borrowed a leaf from her public transport regulation measures,” he added.

Muzeyi also lauded Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) for renovating the Old Tax Park.

He, however, urged KCCA to re-open the refurbished Park to decongest the city most especially the traffic flow on roads.

Muzeyi further urged the public to go for vaccinations and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures while carrying out their day-to-day activities.
