Cabinet last year, approved the Uganda Human Organ Donation and Tissue Transplant Bill 2020.

Mulago Hospital is in the process of operationalising its organ transplant section having completed the construction of the theatre.

Dr Baterana Byarugaba, the executive director Mulago Hospital on Monday revealed that there are certain pending processes that must be completed before the hospital starts transplanting organs.

“Transplanting organs is not a simple thing. There must be a law that allows transplanting because it is not a normal operation and that is what we are currently waiting for,” Baterana said in a telephone interview.

Joel Jaffer Aita, the Chief Executive Officer Joadah Consult that worked on the Mulago Organ Transplant theatre said, “We designed this to be able to transplant various human organs. From kidneys, to conear , heart, born marrow, among others.”

This was posted on his twitter handle alongside a picture showing the completed theatre.

Cabinet last year, approved the Uganda Human Organ Donation and Tissue Transplant Bill 2020.

The Bill seeks to establish a legal framework for human organs, cells and tissue transplant in Uganda and also regulate donations and trade in human organs, cells and tissue for safety and security of Ugandans.
