Mixed Outcomes in Primary Teacher Exams: Over 1,500 Candidates Fall Short

In the release of the 2021 Grade III Teacher certificate examination results, it was revealed that there was a range of performance among candidates. Out of 5,576 primary teachers who took the exam, 1,586 did not pass.

Compared to the previous year, 2021 saw a decline in the overall performance of students. Only 3,786 candidates passed their exams in 2021, which represents 67.90 percent, whereas in 2020, 7,498 out of 8,870 candidates passed, representing 84.53 percent.

However, despite the overall decline, there were improvements in specific subjects. The English Language Education subject, for example, saw a significant increase in the pass rate, reaching 99.80 percent in 2021, up from 94.7 percent in 2020. Conversely, Mathematics education experienced a decrease in performance, with a pass rate of 75.24 percent in 2021, down from 96.0 percent in 2020.

Distinctions and credit passes also decreased in 2021, with only 130 distinctions (2.3 percent) and 3,616 credit passes (64.8 percent), compared to 411 distinctions (4.63 percent) and 7,024 credit passes (79.19 percent) in 2020.

The number of candidates who failed the exam increased significantly in 2021, with 1,586 candidates (28.4 percent) failing, compared to 922 (10.39 percent) in 2020. Additionally, 204 candidates (3.7 percent) received ungraded scores in 2021, while 450 candidates (5.07 percent) received ungraded scores in 2020.

Mugisa Tumwine from St Augustine Butiiti PTC in Kyenjojo District was the top-performing candidate in the 2021 Grade III Teachers’ Certificate in Primary Teacher Education Examinations. She achieved an aggregate of 13 out of a possible 9 in nine subjects and received an ‘A’ in school practice. The best female candidate overall was Zainabu Owokunda from Bikungu PTC in Bushenyi District, who achieved an aggregate of 14 out of a possible 9 in nine subjects and also received an ‘A’ in school practice, along with an overall distinction.
