National – The president for the republic of Uganda H.E.YK Museveni has accorded the former Bushenyi district woman member of Parliament Late Mary Karooro Okurut a national state burial ceremony as away of Thanking her for the good things she did to this nation.
The late Mary Karooro Okurut breathed her last on Monday, August 11th 2025, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya where she had gone for medication.

The late is remembered for being a distinguished leader, patriot, educator, writer, and advocate for women’s empowerment.
The good news of national state burial was announced by the Minister of Presidency Ms Babirye Milly Babalanda.
” The President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed that the late Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut be accorded a national state burial”. Ms Babalanda said.
She added ” The government has formed a National Organizing Committee, chaired by the Minister for Presidency, Ms Milly Babirye Babalanda, along with family representatives, to oversee the funeral arrangements and burial will take place on Saturday”.
Her legacy includes a long career in public service and politics and she served as a Press Secretary to the Vice President in 1993, and later as the Private Press Secretary to President Museveni from 2001 to 2004 and she was a Member of Parliament for the Bushenyi District Woman Parliamentary seat from 2006 to 2021.
Karooro Okurut was also a prolific writer who authored several books, including “The Invisible Weevil” (1998).
She was a co-founder of FEMRITE also known as Uganda Women Writers Association and served as its chairperson and she also served as a columnist for the New Vision, with her last article appearing on July 22nd 2025.
