The areas affected are located around Mt. Elgon which is experiencing heavy rains. “Sironko has registered landslides and floods after experiencing heavy rains,” Irene Nakasiita the public relations officer at the Uganda Red Cross Society said.

Nakasiita said that the areas include the eight oarishes of Bukikoberi, Kirui, Nalugugu, Busui, Bukise, Busape, Bed and Bukirindya in Bukise.

Nakasiita cited other risks in the affected areas which include cracks in buildings especially in areas of Bukirindya.

The water, hygiene and sanitation facilities that were destroyed increase the risks of diarrheal diseases.

“As food crops are destroyed this increases community vulnerabilities and food insecurity. The Uganda Red Cross teams are on the ground to complete rapid assessments which will inform response actions,” Nakasiita said.
