Rukungiri- The Rukungiri municipality MP second runners up has petitioned the High Court in Rukungiri seeking to overturn the results alleging irregularities.
In a petition filed at Rukungiri High Court Registry, Ms Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe who contested as the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party official candidate for Rukungiri municipality Mp seat said the elections conducted on 15th January 2026 were marred with inconsistencies that affected the overall results and the integrity of the process.
The Electoral Commission declared Rtd.Lt.Gen. Henry Tumukunde of the National Resistance Movement-NRM candidate as the winner of the Rukungiri municipality member of parliament with 7,115 votes, followed by Ms Ingrid Kamateneti Turinawe who polled 6,268 votes while Dr Wallen Nuwagaba , Richard Akanyijuka polled 297 and 53 votes respectively.
Led by her Lawyer Isaac Kwagala of Ssingu company and co-advocates Ms Kamateneti said ‘’ the elections were not a true reflection of people’s will, alleging that the NRM candidate Gen Tumukunde connived with the Electoral Commission to manipulate the process in his favor. That’s why we are taking Gen. Tumukunde and the electoral commission to court’’..
In her petition, Ms Kamatenti also indicates that Gen. Tumukunde who was declared winner is not an eligible candidate for the position alleging that he bribed the electoral commission officials to announce him as the winner.
The petition also accuses the electoral commission for announcing a wrong person.

Addressing the press shortly after the court session, Ms Kamateneti said ‘’ we won the election but were not declared the winners so I am happy for my lawyers, my supporters and my team. These people you are seeing around are witnesses so we are ready for court’’.
She also asked the people of Rukungiri municipality to remain hopeful, saying that soon or later , she will be a parliament representing them.
‘’Please let hope live, keep hope alive, don’t be intimidated because I am very much sure that we won this election and soon or later will be in parliament’’ Ms Kamateneti said.
When contacted for a comment Rtd. Lt Gen. Henry Tumukunde, one of the accused said ‘’ I haven’t received any copy of the petition and if she has decided to go to court that’s okay because matters of court are matters of law and we shall go to court for case hearing ‘’.
The Rukungiri district returning officer Mr Abas K Namara told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview that he had not received a copy of the petition from Ms Kamateneti.
‘’ My office has not yet received a copy of the petition from Ms Kamateneti and her lawyers. If the petition comes I will receive it and send it to headquarters in Kampala and if she decides to take it to headquarters I will be notified ‘’ Mr Abas said.
