The Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala and all Uganda, His Eminence Jonah Lwanga, who passed on in Greece a couple of weeks ago, will be laid to rest at St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, Namungoona (in Rubaga Division) on Monday, September 20, 2021
Vice President Jessica Alupo said the body of the Archbishop of Orthodox Church of Uganda, the Most. Rev. Metropolitan Jonah Lwanga who died on September 5; in Athens, Greece; is being transported back home with the help of the government of Uganda.
The body will arrive at Entebbe Airport on Saturday (September 18), at about 3:30 am.

It will then be taken to Namungoona Orthodox Cathedral, at 10:00 am. There will be funeral prayers, speeches and viewing of the body during the day and night. Mourners will also have the opportunity to view the body after Mass on Sunday (September 19). Lwanga will finally be buried on Monday, at 2:00 pm.
Lwanga’s final burial arrangements were communicated during a joint press-briefing by the Orthodox Church and the government of Uganda at Namungoona Orthodox Mission Centre on Wednesday, September 15.
The minister of information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi said the government had opted to give Lwanga an official burial in acknowledgement and honor of his marvelous ecclesiastical duties. He said the government would meet all the burial expenses. He nonetheless said the Prelate’s body will not be taken to Parliament because of the risks associated with Covid-19.
Baryomunsi also assured the public that the funeral activities would be relayed live on the various media platforms to enable the people to follow the proceedings from their home. He also said the burial function would be conducted in full observance of the Covid-19 SOPs.
