Police in Rukungiri district have in custody a 50-year-old man who is accused of using the Kebisoni Health Centre IV ambulance to carry pineapples.
According to the Kigezi region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, Barekye Matayo had on Thursday used the ambulance Reg. No. UG 3797M to take a patient who had been operated to her home in Ntungamo district.
However, on his way back, he was photographed at Nyamunuka trading centre in Ntungamo district along Ntungamo-Rukungiri highway offloading pineapples from the ambulance, something that Maate says is against the code of conduct.
Maate adds that the photo went viral on social media, which prompted them to hunt for Barekye until they landed on him on Friday.
“A case of abuse of office against the driver has been opened at Rukungiri CPS. The driver arrested, his statement recorded and detained. Inquires underway,” Maate says in a statement.
