Rukungiri – The Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam, has told residents of Rukungiri District that Gen. Salim Saleh is leading discussions aimed at securing the release of detained opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye.
Hon .Balaam made the remarks during yesterday’s 28th. October 2026 anti-corruption campaign rally organized by the Ministry of Local Government at Rukungiri Main Stadium in Southern Division, Rukungiri District.
The rally is intending at mobilizing residents and district leaders in the fight against corruption and promote the effective implementation of government programs in the district.
Responding to the chants, Mr Balaam appealed to the gathering to remain calm, saying discussions concerning the opposition politician’s release were underway.
“Gen. Salim Saleh is leading the talks for the release of your son, Dr Besigye,” Mr Balaam told the gathering.
The minister added that ” ” Let us remain calm because discussions concerning the release of Dr Kizza Besigye are underway . Let’s give talks time as we continue working towards addressing the challenges facing our communities,” Mr Balaam told the gathering.”
The arrest of Dr Besigye.
Dr Kizza Besigye was arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, and transferred to Uganda to face treason-related charges in a case that has attracted national and international attention.
He was arrested on 16th November 16, 2024 alongside his associate, Mr Obeid Lutale.
His arrest marked a new chapter in the political and legal battles surrounding the opposition figure, who has spent decades challenging the government through electoral politics and public campaigns.
Who is Dr Besigye?
Dr Besigye is a veteran opposition politician and former presidential candidate and a prominent figure in Uganda’s political landscape for decades.
Dr Besigye is a medical doctor and a retired military officer and he was born in April 1956 in Rukungiri District in southwestern Uganda.
His political journey is particularly significant to Rukungiri, his birthplace, where his name continues to feature prominently in political discussions and public rallies.
