Under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project, Arua City has witnessed the installation of solar-powered streetlights, marking a significant step in enhancing urban infrastructure. The three major streets, Go Down Road, Pajulu Road (Ediofe Cathedral Road), and Arua Avenue Road, all in the central division, now boast the modern lighting solution.
Each solar streetlight pole is equipped with essential features, including a lightning arrester, an inbuilt solar panel, and an earthing system. The installation aims not only to improve visibility and security but also to contribute to the beautification of the city, particularly during the night.
Residents have expressed excitement over the new solar-powered streetlights, citing increased safety and a reduction in criminal activities. Boda boda cyclists, such as Kizito Drabile and Patrick Aluma, highlight the positive impact on their ability to operate at night, providing a sense of security on previously dimly lit roads.

Sam Wadri Nyakua, the Arua City Mayor, disclosed that the investment in the newly installed solar-powered streetlights amounts to over 1.4 billion shillings. He urged city dwellers to actively protect the streetlights from vandalism, emphasizing the dual role they play in enhancing both security and the aesthetic appeal of the city.
Khemis Muzaidi, the Mayor of Central Division in Arua City, sees the potential economic benefits of the solar-powered streetlights. He anticipates that well-lit streets could facilitate night markets, contributing to local revenue and fostering economic activities after dark.
Arua City, having been among the initial beneficiaries of the USMID program in 2013, is now reaping the rewards of improved urban infrastructure. The project’s overall objective is to enhance the institutional performance of urban councils, ultimately leading to improved service delivery. Other cities that have benefited from the USMID program include Lira, Gulu, Soroti, Entebbe, Mbale, Tororo, and Jinja.
This initiative not only aligns with the broader goals of urban development but also showcases the potential of sustainable and innovative solutions, such as solar-powered street lighting, in creating safer and more vibrant urban spaces.
