The Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) is making preparations for an upcoming event that will bring together veterinarians, livestock farmers, and experts from both local and international backgrounds. Scheduled for late November and December in Mbale City, this three-day affair promises to be a highlight of the season.

The event, taking place at Mbale Courts View Hotel, will feature various activities, including a Farmers Engagement and Exhibition, Scientific Symposium, and the Annual General Meeting. With an expected turnout of over 1000 participants, including veterinarians, veterinary paraprofessionals, and livestock farmers, UVA aims to provide training on cutting-edge technologies in the livestock sector. Pre-conference activities will involve reaching out to farmers and offering livestock and pet vaccinations.

Dr. Obbo Boniface, the General Secretary of UVA, explained that the primary goal of the conference is to create an open and intellectually stimulating environment for members of the veterinary community, the public, and development partners. This environment will facilitate discussions on various aspects of veterinary services that contribute to national development.

The conference will revolve around the theme of “A People-Centered Veterinary Services for Socio-Economic Transformation.”

Dr. Obbo extended an invitation to both local and international veterinarians and stakeholders to submit abstracts for presentation at the scientific conference before November 15, 2023. Those expected to submit abstracts include central government veterinarians, academics, livestock producers, veterinary product dealers, consumers, policymakers, extension workers, researchers, development partners, financial institutions, and community leaders.

The conference will delve into sub-themes such as veterinary services in a changing policy environment, diagnostics and genomics, the adoption of the One Health approach in addressing public health emergencies (including antimicrobial resistance and tick acaricide resistance), and animal disease surveillance for preparedness, prediction, and planning.
