A 20-year-old pregnant woman, Elizabeth Orishaba, was sexually assaulted by a male health worker at Mparo Health Centre 4 in Rukiga District, Uganda. The suspect, Darius Orikiriza, is a 38-year-old enrolled nurse who lives in the quarters of the health centre.
The incident occurred on August 21, 2023, at around 1:00 PM. Ms. Orishaba had visited the medical facility for a routine medical checkup. She was directed to the scanning department, where Mr. Orikiriza was operating.
Upon arrival at the scanning department, Ms. Orishaba was instructed to disrobe. She was then reportedly subjected to a non-consensual sexual act. Distressed by the incident, she immediately reported the matter to the facility’s management. The management promptly notified the local police.
A team of investigators was dispatched to the scene and took Mr. Orikiriza into custody. Samples were collected from both the victim and the suspect for forensic analysis. Mr. Orikiriza also underwent testing for his HIV status.
The police are investigating the matter and Mr. Orikiriza is being held in police custody. He is expected to be arraigned in court soon.
