KISORO:

Kisoro Municipal authorities have announced their determination to clear street vendors doing business along Kisoro-Bunagana highway starting on Tuesday, February 21st.

Kisoro Municipality Mayor, Ndyana Richard, confirmed the development today. The affected vendors include those at Kisoro hospital, Kumudenge, and those at the old market near Centenary Bank.

According to the Mayor, there have been numerous complaints from the Ministry of Trade, Kisoro District Roads Committee, and tourists regarding street vendors operating close to main roads, leading to accidents and garbage accumulation in the municipality.

Ndyana noted that street vendors, mainly those selling fruits, should relocate to available markets, including the old market, Rusiza Market, and the new market. He further stated that the municipality would immediately start cleaning the area once vendors are relocated. There will be no fear or favor during enforcement since the whole district supports the move to gain a tourism city status.

In response, the Chair of Kisoro vendors, Nizeyimana Silas, said that vendors are not prepared to leave their locations unless the municipality finds them an isolated area where they can operate. He added that other markets are disorganized and have a mixture of goods sold in them.
