National – A total of 29  National Unity Platform ( NUP) supporters have been arrested in Mityana after being blocked the highway during presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi’s campaign movement, highlighting ongoing tensions over rally routes.

Police clashed with some presidential candidates in recent days over campaign routes, including Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and FDC’s Nathan Nandala Mafabi.

On Friday last week, Kyagulanyi was forced to cancel rallies in Iganga after security blocked his intended route.

Yesterday Bobi Wine was expected to take the Mityana highway for his rally in the central district but opted to use Hoima Road, which Police said was against the agreed plans.

A joint security deployment had been arranged to facilitate his movement.

The Kampala Metropolitan police spokes person confirmed the arrest saying that at  Bujjuko Trading Centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, disrupting traffic and inciting unrest thus their arrest.

“Despite repeated warnings from security personnel, the group persisted, leading to the arrest of 29 suspects. The detainees are currently held at Wakiso Police Division.”

Onyango urged all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users.
